Nets wingman and athletic freak Gerald Green has one half of his ring finger missing because it was amputated after an accident he suffered in the sixth grade:

Green was in the sixth grade when a freak accident left him with half of his ring finger. Wearing his mother’s class ring, the 2007 NBA Slam Dunk champion tried to jam on a makeshift hoop attached to a doorway. The ring caught on a nail and his finger was ripped to the bone.

Amputation was the only option.
“All you saw was nothing but white bone, like a skeleton,” Green said. “They said my tendons, all my ligaments were ripped out.”
This is why you should never wear your mother's ring when you are in the sixth grade. Green was very unfortunate to go through this freak accident, it's really not a story anyone could have made up. Now everyone is wondering well, if he still had his whole finger, he would probably be a better shooter and maybe belong to the NBA elite. We won't ever know that. I'm just glad he is in the NBA because he may be the only active player to have enough creativity and leaping ability to catch an alley oop and go for a windmill with his head above the rim, and defenders around him.
Despite having his finger amputated, the 26-year-old Green definitely managed to have a very good basketball career from high school to the NBA. He still has tremendous upside.
